Sweep a Wallet Into an Instant Swap (No Dust Left)

You want to close out a wallet completely — send everything into an instant swap and leave zero dust behind. Simple in theory, fiddly in practice. The moment you try, three questions appear: How much do I actually type in? The wallet subtracts a network fee, so the exact amount that leaves is a moving target. What rate will I get? On a floating quote it isn't locked until your deposit confirms. Will the exchange even accept an odd, to-the-satoshi amount? This guide walks through how to truly empty a wallet into a single swap — why "send max" is the key, why floating rates are the right tool for a sweep, the dust and reserve traps on each chain, and which kinds of exchanges make this painless.

What "sweep" really means

Sweeping a wallet means spending every last unit in it in one transaction, so the resulting balance is exactly zero. That's harder than it sounds, because you can never spend 100% of a balance — the network fee has to come out of the coins themselves. If you type in your full balance and then add the fee on top, there's nothing to pay the fee with and the send fails. Sweeping flips that around: it sends balance minus fee, so the wallet empties and the fee is covered. There's a second reason sweeping is its own operation on UTXO chains like Bitcoin, Litecoin and Monero: your balance isn't one number, it's a pile of separate coins (UTXOs). A real sweep gathers all of them into a single spend. Miss one and a sliver stays behind — that's the dust you're trying to avoid.

Use your wallet's "Send Max" — don't do the math yourself

Every well-built wallet has a button for this, labeled "Max", "Send All", "Sweep", or "Empty wallet". Always use it instead of hand-typing an amount. Here's what it does that you can't reliably do manually:

  • It calculates the fee and subtracts it so the transaction actually broadcasts instead of erroring out with "insufficient funds for fee."
  • It selects every spendable coin — on UTXO wallets it pulls in all confirmed UTXOs, not just enough to cover the amount, so nothing is orphaned.
  • It leaves no change output. A normal send creates a change coin that comes back to you; a max send has no change, which is exactly what "empty the wallet" requires.

The catch you must plan around: because Send Max derives the amount from the fee, you don't know the exact figure until the wallet builds the transaction. That single fact is why the rest of this guide matters.

The core problem: an exact amount you can't predict

Instant swaps come in two rate types, and the choice is the whole game when you're sweeping. If you're new to the distinction, read Fixed vs Floating Rates first — here's how each one collides with a sweep:

  • Fixed rate locks your output up front, but only if you send a precise, pre-agreed deposit amount. Send a satoshi more or less and you've broken the contract: the exchange treats it as an under- or over-payment and either refunds, or re-quotes at the market rate. Since Send Max produces an amount you can't know in advance, a fixed-rate quote and a wallet sweep fight each other.
  • Floating (market) rate quotes an estimate and then converts whatever actually arrives at the rate when your deposit confirms. It doesn't care that the amount is an odd 0.04173219 BTC. This is the natural fit for a sweep: you empty the wallet, and the exchange prices exactly what landed.

Rule of thumb: sweep with a floating rate. You give up the up-front certainty of a locked output, but you gain the ability to send an unpredictable "everything" amount without tripping under/over-payment handling. If you must use a fixed rate, see the workaround at the end.

Do it in the right order

The sequence removes almost all the friction:

  • 1. Start the swap first. Pick your pair (say BTC → XMR), choose the floating rate, paste your destination wallet address, and get the exchange's deposit address. You don't need to commit to an exact send amount on a floating order — the estimate is just a preview.
  • 2. Check the min and max. Every swap route has a minimum and maximum deposit. Make sure your wallet's balance sits inside that window before you sweep (more on this below).
  • 3. Sweep from your wallet. In your wallet, paste the exchange's deposit address, hit Send Max / Sweep, and let it compute the fee and empty the balance.
  • 4. Let it confirm. On a floating rate the output is priced when the deposit confirms, so the amount you receive reflects the exact swept sum. See Blockchain Confirmations and Swaps.

Doing the swap first means you already hold the deposit address when you sweep — no scrambling to copy an amount that the wallet only reveals at the last second. Always double-check the deposit address after pasting; clipboard-swapping malware targets exactly this moment.

Watch the minimum and maximum

A sweep can silently fall outside a route's limits, and "everything in my wallet" is a fixed number you can't nudge:

  • Below the minimum. If the wallet holds only a little, the swept amount may be under the exchange's minimum deposit — the swap won't process and refunding tiny amounts is itself expensive. For genuinely small leftovers, sometimes the honest answer is that they're dust not worth moving at all.
  • Above the maximum. Large balances can exceed a route's cap or its available liquidity, forcing a partial or a refund. If you're moving a big sum, split it or pick a deeper-liquidity venue — see Moving Larger Amounts Privately.

Chain-by-chain: where "zero" isn't quite zero

Different blockchains leave different residue, and knowing this up front is how you avoid the "I swept and there's still a balance" surprise.

  • Bitcoin & other UTXO coins (LTC, BCH, DOGE). Send Max consolidates all UTXOs into one spend and truly zeroes the wallet. The privacy cost: combining every coin into one transaction links them all together on-chain. If unlinkability matters, read chain-hopping for privacy before you consolidate.
  • Monero (XMR). Monero has a purpose-built "Sweep All" that spends every output at once — the cleanest sweep there is. Two quirks: change from any recent send is locked for 10 blocks (~20 min), so wait for it to unlock or the sweep won't include it; and sweeping consolidates outputs, which has its own privacy trade-off.   • Ethereum & ERC-20 tokens. The gas trap. To send an ERC-20 token you need ETH for gas, and gas is paid in ETH, not the token — so you can zero the token balance but you'll always have a little ETH left, or none of the token can move at all. To empty an account holding ETH itself, Send Max subtracts gas and can get very close to zero. You can't cleanly empty both a token and its gas coin in one shot.
  • BNB Chain, Tron, Solana. Same native-gas rule: BEP-20 needs BNB, TRC-20 (USDT) needs TRX energy/bandwidth, SPL tokens need SOL. Solana additionally enforces a rent-exempt minimum the account must retain, and XRP reserves a few XRP per account that can never be swept out. On these chains "empty" means "down to the protocol's floor," not literally zero.

The pattern: UTXO and Monero wallets can hit a true zero; account-based chains leave a small native-coin remainder for gas or reserves. Plan the last little bit accordingly.

Which exchanges make sweeping painless

If you're stuck with a fixed rate

Sometimes you want the locked output a fixed rate gives. You can still sweep, in two steps:

  • Sweep to yourself first. Do a Send Max to a fresh address in your own wallet. Now you have one clean output whose exact amount you can read.
  • Then place the fixed-rate order for that exact figure and send it normally. Because you know the precise amount, the fixed quote won't trip under/over-payment. The cost is one extra network fee and — on UTXO chains — an extra on-chain link, so weigh it against the certainty you're buying.

For most people, most of the time, a single floating-rate sweep is simpler and cheaper.
