JavaScript and Tracking: Settings and Browser to Use for Private Swaps

JavaScript is what makes most of the modern web interactive — and it's also the engine behind most online tracking. Scripts can measure your browser, load third-party trackers, watch how you move and click, and on a malicious site, do real harm. For a private, safe swap, understanding JavaScript — and controlling it — is one of the highest-leverage things you can do. Why JavaScript matters for privacy and safety

A swap that works with little or no JavaScript exposes far less of you. Here's what scripts can do when you allow them:

  • Track and fingerprint. Most device fingerprinting runs in JavaScript — reading your canvas, fonts, screen, and hardware to build a near-unique ID.
  • Load third-party trackers. Analytics, ad networks, and beacons pulled in by scripts report your visit to companies you've never heard of.
  • Record behavior. Session-replay scripts can log mouse movement, clicks, and form input.
  • Increase attack surface. On a compromised or fake swap site, malicious JavaScript can swap a displayed address, push a wallet-drainer, or phish you. Less script execution means fewer ways to be attacked.

None of this means JavaScript is evil — but on a page where you're moving money, you want it minimal and under your control.

The settings to use

The aim is to run as little script as possible, and only from the swap's own domain — never from third parties.

  • A script controller — NoScript or your browser's controls. Tools like NoScript let you block JavaScript by default and allow it per-site. Permit only the exchange's own domain; deny everything third-party.
  • uBlock Origin for tracker and ad blocking. It strips out known tracking scripts before they run and can block third-party scripts and frames in its advanced mode.
  • Block third-party scripts specifically. First-party scripts may be needed for the swap to work; third-party ones almost never are. Blocking them kills most tracking with little breakage.
  • Tor Browser's security slider. Set to "Safer" it disables JavaScript on non-HTTPS sites; "Safest" disables JavaScript entirely. If a swap works at "Safest," you're running essentially no script at all.

The best browser for maximum privacy

Pair those settings with a browser built for it:

  • Tor Browser — the strongest choice: a uniform anti-fingerprinting profile, a built-in security slider to dial JavaScript down to zero, and Tor for your IP. Use it at its defaults.
  • Mullvad Browser — Tor Browser's hardened engine without the Tor network, to pair with a VPN; add uBlock/NoScript-style control on top.
  • Brave — a convenient mainstream option with aggressive tracker blocking and a per-site "Block Scripts" toggle, good for everyday use.

Whichever you pick, keep a separate, dedicated browser for swaps and don't log into identity-linked accounts in it.

What not to do

  • Don't "allow all" the first time a swap breaks. Enable scripts one domain at a time; blanket-allowing third parties re-opens the tracking firehose.
  • Don't run a money swap on a site that demands heavy third-party JavaScript if a lighter alternative exists — every extra script is more tracking and more risk.
  • Don't disable your blockers "just to make it work." If a swap only functions with all protections off, that's a signal to choose a different one.
  • Don't trust the on-screen address blindly on a script-heavy page. Malicious JS can alter what's displayed — always verify a deposit/withdrawal address out of band.
  • Don't confuse blocking JS with hiding your IP. They're different layers — you still want Tor or a VPN for the network side.
