What device fingerprinting actually is
Instead of storing a cookie on your machine, a site measures your browser and combines the results into a fingerprint. No single value identifies you, but together they're often unique. Common signals include:
- Canvas and WebGL — the site draws an invisible image and reads back tiny rendering differences from your GPU and drivers.
- Installed fonts — the exact set you have is surprisingly distinctive.
- Screen and window size, color depth, and device pixel ratio.
- User-agent, language, and timezone — your browser version, OS, locale, and clock offset.

- Don't resize or maximize Tor Browser. Its default window size is part of the disguise; changing it makes you stand out. Leave it as it opens.
- Don't tinker with about:config, fonts, or user-agent to "look more private." Non-standard settings backfire by making you rarer.
- Don't log into identity-linked accounts in the same browser/profile you use for a private swap. That's the easiest way to correlate the fingerprint to the real you.
- Don't mix activities in one profile. Use a clean, dedicated browser for swaps and nothing else.
- Don't assume a VPN alone hides you. It changes your IP, not your fingerprint — those are separate problems.
What to do — blend in
- Use Tor Browser at its defaults for the swap — don't customize it. Raise its security slider if you want to disable more scripting.
- Keep a separate, single-purpose browser for swaps, isolated from your logged-in life.
