Most instant swaps deliver Bitcoin on-chain — to a normal bc1 address, confirmed in Bitcoin's ~10-minute blocks. A Lightning swap is different: it delivers (or receives) BTC over the Lightning Network, Bitcoin's instant, near-free second layer. What the Lightning Network is
Lightning is a layer-2 network built on top of Bitcoin. Instead of recording every payment on the blockchain, two parties open a payment channel with one funding transaction, then send unlimited instant payments back and forth off-chain, and only settle to the base chain when the channel closes. How Lightning differs from on-chain Bitcoin
If you've only done on-chain swaps (like Litecoin to Bitcoin or Ethereum to Bitcoin), Lightning breaks a few assumptions:
- No static address — you use an invoice. On-chain you paste a reusable
bc1address. On Lightning you present a one-time invoice (alnbc…string, BOLT11) that encodes a specific amount and an expiry. Pay it once and it's done. - Near-instant, near-free. Lightning payments settle in seconds for a tiny fee, versus ~10-minute confirmations and variable on-chain network fees.
- Amounts are smaller. Lightning shines for small-to-moderate amounts; very large transfers are better on-chain because of channel capacity limits.
- Liquidity matters. To receive over Lightning you need enough inbound capacity in your channels — custodial wallets handle this for you; some self-custodial ones may need a setup step.
What makes it work differently under the hood
- Payment channels. Funds live in a 2-of-2 channel; balances update instantly off-chain and only hit the blockchain when the channel opens or closes.
- Routing with HTLCs. Payments route across multiple channels using Hash Time-Locked Contracts — cryptographic conditions that guarantee either the whole payment completes or it safely fails and the funds return. There's no "stuck halfway."
- Invoices and addresses. Besides BOLT11 invoices, you may see a Lightning Address (looks like an email,
you@wallet.com) or an LNURL — conveniences layered on top of invoices. For a swap payout, an exact-amount invoice is what's usually required.
What you need: a Lightning wallet
You need a wallet that can generate invoices (to receive) and pay invoices (to send). Options fall into two camps:
- Custodial Lightning wallets (e.g. Wallet of Satoshi, and other beginner apps) — easiest to start: liquidity is handled for you and receiving "just works," but the provider holds the keys, so it's not self-custody. Fine for small amounts.
- Self-custodial Lightning wallets (e.g. Phoenix, Breez, or Muun as an on-chain+Lightning hybrid; Zeus if you run your own node) — you keep control, at the cost of a little channel/liquidity management. This keeps you aligned with true self-custody.
For receiving a swap payout, make sure your wallet has enough inbound liquidity for the amount — custodial wallets abstract this away; with some self-custodial wallets you may need to receive on-chain once first to open a channel.

- Match the exact amount. Because the invoice encodes a specific amount, use a fixed rate so the figure doesn't move while you set up — a floating rate can leave the invoice mismatched.
- Check inbound liquidity before receiving a larger payout, or it can fail; custodial wallets remove this worry.
- Respect amount limits. Keep Lightning swaps within sensible sizes; route very large amounts on-chain instead.
